About
Alicia Gilbert
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience working with children and adults with medical/mental health needs and intellectual/developmental delays. This experience includes working with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, trauma, substance use, identity issues, relationships, life transitions, pregnancy, postpartum care, ADHD, OCD, Autism and other ID/DD. I am especially committed to assisting teen girls and women to find their voices and own personal sense of power. I enjoy helping women gain the tools to prepare and successfully manage the challenges that arise in life such as with being in a healthy relationship, disengaging from unhealthy patterns/relationships, transitioning into motherhood, family adjustments, work/life satisfaction and balance. I assist individuals who may be currently (or have been in the past) involved in emotionally abusive or narcissistic relationships. I also enjoy helping couples to learn more effective ways of communicating their needs, to recognize and release damaging patterns, fears, and resentments. In my practice, I have a deep respect for my clients' diverse culture, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and ability.
I enjoy bringing an eclectic mix of evidence-based strategies to meet my client's needs. This approach is strengths-based, solution-focused, utilizes psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral approaches, positive neuroplasticity, trauma focused practices, works to balance emotions/internal responses, incorporating meditation, mindfulness and self-compassion. I am passionate about the power of human connection, and I strongly value the healing properties of the therapeutic relationship. I believe in the use of empathy and compassion to build a safe, trusting space where people can explore who they are and who they would like to become. Through my practice, I strive to create a warm and relaxed space where individuals can feel safe to explore difficult topics, believing that this is the first and most important step in the healing process. I recognize that the human experience is often deeply complex and can be painful yet has the potential to be beautiful and fulfilling as well. My focus is to help you to move forward in a way that honors individual and collective experiences, unique skill sets, and desires. I believe that compassion and skillful collaboration between the therapist and client can facilitate the client’s ability to not only heal but to thrive.
My focus, while working with people, is to walk alongside them and help them to better understand themselves, gain insight, work through the more painful moments of the past, and discover their own capability to cope with and grow through life’s hardships. My approach to therapy is holistic and integrative, exploring the many components and intersecting areas of a person’s life. I explore areas of an individual's well-being including physical health, social health, emotional health, occupational and financial health, environmental health, intellectual health and spiritual health. Assessment and planning is ongoing as an individual learns new skills and their needs change. I tailor each therapeutic experience to the individual, accounting for the unique needs of each person. I love empowering and helping equip individuals with tool kits carefully considered for their specific life's challenges. I share in the success and joy of each client when they develop strategies and skills to meet their needs as well as to meet their goals.
I received my bachelor's and master’s degrees in Social Work from Rutgers University. In addition to my private practice, I currently teach as an adjunct at Rutgers University, enjoying teaching future social workers for their role in our connected communities. I am also an active member of my community equity initiative, Camden County Community Planning and Advocacy Council and belongs to The International Association of Trauma Professionals.
I belief that it is important to invest into self-care and wellness for my clients and also for myself. My self-care and wellness routines includes spending quality time with her family, friends, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, dance, learning guitar, design, comedy writing and creating. She loves to spend time outdoors, travel, and embrace life to the fullest.
